Kansas Car Insurance Laws
Kansas uses a No-Fault insurance system. In a car accident,
each person's own insurance company pays medical expenses,
lost wages, and certain other financial losses regardless
of who caused the accident. Kansas law requires its citizens
to purchase a minimum amount of liability, personal injury
protection and uninsured, underinsured motorist coverage.
The required minimum coverages are:
Kansas auto insurance minimum liability coverage,
25/50/10:
Bodily Injury Liability $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident;
Property Damage Liability of $10,000 per accident.
Personal Injury Protection (PIP or No-fault)
• $4,500 per person for medical expenses;
• $900 per month for one year for disability/loss of
income;
• $2000 for funeral, burial or cremation expenses;
• $4500 for rehabilitation expenses; and
• Survivor Benefits of $900/month for disability income
and $25/day in-home assistance for one year.
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Protection
• $25,000 per person;
• $50,000 per accident.
It is recommended that you purchase more than the minimum
required as you are responsible for the difference if you
should be held liable for amounts greater than the limits
you choose. Some companies may offer higher limits of PIP
benefits. Collision and comprehensiver are not mandated in
Kansas but lenders may require these coverages to qualify
for a car loan.
