Car Insurance Car Rental Coverage

Information on rental car coverage

Rental car coverage is an option that you can add to a car insurance policy. Depending on your insurer, it may be already included in certain policies.

Rental car insurance will reimburse you a certain amount, usually around $20 a day, to pay for the cost of renting a car if your own vehicle is in the garage for longer than 1 day following a car accident or other claim that is covered by your insurance.

There are four major types of protection given by rental car coverage:

* Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Loss Damage Waiver (LDW), Physical Damage Waiver (PDW). While all rental cars have mandatory liability insurance provided by the car rental company, this insurance does not cover damage to or loss of the rental vehicle. With a rental car coverage policy, you are covered in case the rental car is damaged in a collision, stolen or vandalized.

* Additional personal liability coverage (Liability Insurance Supplement). This gives you an additional amount of liability coverage on a rented car.

* Personal Accident Insurance (PAI). Provides protection in case the driver dies or is seriously injured in a car accident that occurs with a rental car.

* Personal Property Coverage (PPC). Covers certain personal items in case they are stolen from the rental car.

It is recommended to consult your insurance agent to determine the amount of rental coverage that is best suited for your needs. You should make sure that the amount of coverage that you purchase will be sufficient to pay for a rental of a car that is similar to the one your currently own.
